Frequently Asked Questions
Rolled ham (often Wiltshire-style) has been boned, flattened and rolled before curing, which typically results in a consistent texture, uniform slices and enhanced “lean-and-firm” mouthfeel. Regular (bone-in or flat-cut) ham may vary in shape, thickness and texture, and often features the natural muscle separation and external fat. In the case of our unsmoked rolled ham from The Black Farmer, the rolling process helps deliver a uniformly tender yet firm texture and deeper flavour from the traditional British cure, making it ideal for both slicing cold and carving warm.
A fully cooked ham (such as our 100 % British unsmoked rolled ham) can be frozen on the day of purchase for up to 6 months for best quality. Ensure it is vacuum-sealed or well-wrapped to minimise freezer burn. To defrost safely, place it in the refrigerator until fully thawed — typically overnight or longer depending on size — rather than room-temperature. Then either serve cold, or gently heat until piping hot throughout. After defrosting, consume it promptly rather than refreezing.
Unsmoked ham generally lacks the added flavouring or surface treatments used in smoked versions, which can mean fewer compounds derived from the smoking process (though nutritional differences may be modest). To assess health and quality, check for: (1) the stated cut and origin (e.g., 100 % British pork), (2) full cooking status and ready-to-serve indication, (3) nutritional values (especially fat, saturated fat and salt), and (4) the presence of preservatives (e.g., sodium nitrite) or antioxidants. For example, our unsmoked rolled ham offers approximately 9–10 g fat, 3–4 g saturates and ~2.0–2.3 g salt per 100 g—making it a leaner alternative with rich flavour.
