WELCOME!

I am Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones MBE, The Black Farmer. Born in Jamaica and raised in inner-city Birmingham, I turned my passion for farming into a brand that breaks barriers and creates opportunities for all. From my farm on the Devon/Cornwall border, I bring the rural experience to urban communities. Welcome to The Black Farmer!

I came to the UK from Jamaica as a child of the Windrush Generation. Growing up dyslexic in a family of 11 in inner-city Birmingham, I found solace in growing fruit and vegetables on my father’s allotment, sparking my dream to have a farm of my own. Despite leaving school with no qualifications and little hope, my life turned around when I was given a break.

At the age of 40, I fulfilled my dream by buying a small farm on the Devon/Cornwall border, leading to the creation of The Black Farmer brand. My mission is to break down barriers and create opportunities for people to fulfil their potential, regardless of ethnicity or background. By bringing the rural farm shop experience to urban areas, I aim to bridge a divide and create a community space where everyone can meet, enjoy, and be inspired. I can’t wait to see you there!

BECOMING THE BLACK FARMER

When I finally realised my dream of owning a farm in Devon, my neighbours quickly coined a name for me:  “The Black Farmer”.

This led to me launching my own brand, offering quality British products with unexpected twists across food, drink and lifestyle. Read my full story here.

THE FARM

As the eldest of nine, it was my job to help Dad on the allotment, where he grew vegetables to supplement food for the family. It was here, away from our crowded two-up, two-down terraced house, that I made a promise to myself as an 11-year-old boy that, one day, I would have my very own farm.

Wilfreds Windrush Story

WINDRUSH STORY

As a member of the Windrush Generation, I’m proud to share my story with you. Let’s celebrate this historic event by honouring the courage and determination of those who journeyed from the Caribbean to start anew in the UK. My story is just one of many, but I hope it serves as an inspiration to future generations.
