This is the classic British ham hock: cured, cooked and ready to use, with a clean, savoury flavour that lets your leeks, pulses and herbs lead the dish. Because it arrives cooked, you are building flavour rather than starting from raw, and the meat pulls apart easily once warmed through.

How to use a cooked ham hock

Warm it gently in a pan of simmering water or stock for 20 to 30 minutes until piping hot, then pull the meat from the bone. Classic uses include ham hock, leek and potato broth, Caribbean-style rice and peas, braised butter beans, and shredded ham hock stirred through lentils or greens. Simmer the bone afterwards for a stock that carries the whole flavour of the joint.
